Wildlife Hazard Management (WHM)
Unit of Geneva Airport

Wildlife hazard prevention at Geneva Airport has been a safety concern at Geneva Airport for many years. This issue has been addressed by the creation of the Wildlife Hazard Management (WHM) Unit in January 2005. WHM Unit is the product of a long standing partnership between Geneva Airport (GVA) and BTEE SA. Wildlife hazard prevention in airports, particularly in our airport, is a large, complex, innovative and fascinating field.

The WHM Unit must face practical, technical and scientific problems caused by wildlife, birds in particular, at Geneva Airport.

The first objective of the WHM Unit is the daily active control of wildlife within the airport perimeter. The Unit also gathers scientific data and produces statistical analysis in order to improve WHM. Its main tasks are :

Daily observation and survey of wildlife within the airport perimeter

Active interventions to reduce wildlife strike hazard

Data recording and administration related to wildlife strike occurred within Geneva Airport, as well as impacts reported by aircrafts upon landing when the collision took place in another airport (cooperation between airports)

Information and communication to runway agents and Safety Office, including continuing education

All other actions needed to minimize wildlife hazard

Besides, WHM Unit is in charge to study year round the attractive factors on site in order to develop passive measures to reduce the attractivity of the airport for wildlife and thus to limit the presence of unwanted animals.

Other studies and scientific monitoring are also conducted, particularly to control the nesting of certain species, follow the evolution of the airport environment and attempt to control wildlife’s food chain.
